It was a Friday afternoon and I was too engrossed on a Teams call discussing issues with my fellow team mates, when suddenly mumma entered the room. She looked worried and was in a haste so I asked her what's the matter? What was she upto? To this she replied, "Your papa is not feeling well..I am taking him to the hospital.." I knew something was wrong as father has always been the one with a strong immunity. I ended the call and came out of the room to look at him. I freaked out! He was sweating profusely and his breathing was shallow. In an instant I guessed he was having a heart attack. I rushed downstairs to look for an auto. There was one auto waiting just outside the colony. I requested the driver to come near the building as my father could not walk much but he refused saying he already has a booking. I understood he didn't want to take us. For 5 mins I saw him sitting idle and with no choice I had to wait for another auto. After some time that auto driver left the premises with no passenger. I looked the other way of the road and suddenly out of nowhere an auto stopped near me. The driver was an old man in his 50s probably. He said 'I saw.. you were waiting for an auto but nobody is stopping by. I told him my father was serious and i needed to take him to the hospital. I showed him my building and asked him to drive there. He calmly said..Beta you sit in the auto.. don't worry. I will take you to the hospital. I and my sister who stays nearby.. brought my father downstairs and rushed to the local hospital..i couldn't thank the driver uncle enough. He was a Messiah for me! At the local hospital the doctors ran some tests and said to immediately shift him to a more advanced hospital for proper treatment as he had a severe heart attack. We rushed again out of the hospital and sat in another auto. The driver was a young lad and he drove us through one way, in opposite direction of the incoming traffic as it was a shortcut and shouting "emergency hai!" so that people could move out of the way. Papa's health deteriorated but thankfully we reached the hospital on time! One more saviour to the rescue! Papa was being operated and we family members just prayed so that his operation could be successful. Nervous and tensed we waited for hours. The doctor called us and said he is out of danger now but he will continue to stay in ICU for the next couple of days.
Life had changed instantly for some reason. It was as if someone laid a bag of responsibilities on my shoulder. Family members took turns to stay day in and day out. Relatives started calling one after the other and started visiting. Never had I felt so matured before. To carry out the paper works.. to handle relatives.. to juggle from house to the hospital at morning 7 and come back home at night around 10 every day. The long stays at the hospital were taking a toll on my body. At the hospital there were so many kinds of people visiting.. some parents with their newborn..some aged gracefully.. some handicapped.. some getting admitted..some getting discharged..somebody crying for their loved ones.. it was as if in this one movie called LIFE there were these characters every person has to take his/her role into at some stage. A few days later papa got discharged and we brought him home. He was told for a complete bedrest. I took up the task of bringing home groceries and necessary commodities. Never had I ever bought vegetables in my life before..but now I learned the art of purchasing good veggies.. I learned where was the flour mill.. I learned where to pay the cable bill..I learned when to fill up the water purifier..I learned at what time to keep the garbage bags out of the house.. when to water the plants.. I learned how to adjust my daily chores of cleaning and cooking with office. These things are never taught in school. They were non existent to me till this time..only because my parents were doing them for me... But situation taught me otherwise. The local market was so lively I never predicted. Some vendors are too good and even give you extra veggies because they know you are their frequent customer!! :P Doesn't that count as an accomplishment as well? Multitasking as an individual..not just in corporate life but in real life too.. The learning has been overwhelming. Papa is recuperating and I am still learning a lot of new things now.. wondering why didn't I learn this earlier...😊
